Little Brown Jug voted top 3-y-o

. Wellington Voting for the Bergin Awards, the preliminary selection of the seven leading horses during the 1979-80 racing season from which the horse of the year will be chosen, dosed yesterday. Organised by the New Zealand Racing Journalist’s Association, the Bergin Awards are named after the late Mr Brian Bergin, a founder of the “Horse of the Year” title and one-time president of the N.Z.R.J.A. The winners of the various sections are:

Top Two-year-old: Summer Hdze (43 votes). Others were Yir Tiz (8), Paddy Boy (1). Top Three-year-old: Little Brown -Jug (36 votes). Others were Silver Nymph (12), Lovelace Watkins and Goober’s Queen (2 each). Top stayer: Cubacade (22 votes). Others were Blue Denim (15), Mr Ay Bee (9), Lovelace Watkins (2), Barry Stuart, Drum and Judena (one each). Top sprinter: Coober’s Queen (22 votes). Others were Silver Wraith (7), Arbre Chene and Flying View (6 each), Silver

Nymph (4), Luck Roona (2), Anderil, Head Planet and Scotch Mist (one each). Top miler: Silver Nymph (39 votes). Others were Mellseur (6), March Legend (2), Arbre Chene, Golden Rhapsody, Langeland, Raywood Lass and Shivaree (one each). Top weight-for-age: Mellseur (21 votes). Others were Arbre Chene (18), Orchiidra and Silver Nymph (3 each), Blue Denim, Coober’s Queen, Little Brown Jug, Judena, Shivaree, Silver Wraith (one each). Top jumper: Guess Who

(32 votes). Others were Mr Hickey (18), Thumbs Orf (2). As the top sprinter, Coober’s Queen is gaining her second Bergin Award. Last year she was voted the top two-year-old for the 1978-79 season. The announcement of the Wrightson Bloodstock “Horse of the Year” will be made at a dinner to be held at Trentham after racing on Wellington Guineas Day, Saturday, October 18. The main trophy and the Bergin Award trophies will also be presented at that time.
