Broken glass for tile-making

Potentially valuable broken glass is being dumped, according to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. The glass is useful in the manufacture of ceramic-type tiles, it says. Virtually all ceramic tiles are now imported from Europe and South-East Asia. The department says it would be possible to save overseas funds and create jobs by using New Zealand glass to make similar tiles. Broken glass, or cullet, need not be washed or col-our-sorted but contaminants have to be removed. Experimental tiles are now in production and appear :to have at least the strength and durability of ceramic tiles. At. least one big manufacturer has taken steps towards producing them commercially, says the department.
