$700M ‘lost to alcohol’
PA Wellington Alcohol costs New Zealand between $550 million and $7OO million a year through road accidents, drownings, violent crime, the treatment of alcoholics, and absenteeism, according to the president of the Temperance Alliance, Mr T. J. Quayle. This figure updated the 1977 total of $4OO million to $5OO million estimated by the National Society .on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency, allowing for inflation, he told the annual meeting of the alliance in Wellington.
