Waitangiroto development
Sir, — I offered no opinion in response to A. Gilbert’s reference to tree felling hear the Waitangiroto because L do not have tech-, nica! data .to.assess possible effects. My. point was that a correspondent who consistently tries to link the colony with Okarito and makes such irrational proposals as to have the Government buy out all Coasters and herd them off to join the unemployed elsewhere, should have obvious geographical deficiencies corrected. Concern has been expressed for years' that development
of the large tract of scrubland swamp involved might affect the flow of the Waitangiroto but as development can only be gradual I imagine that any such effect could be noted before it became a threat to the colony. Forgoing completely the use of a substantial area of rich land is a high price to pay for the prevention of something which is only a possibility. At any event, the colony could die out without human aid and then everyone is a loser. So I keep my feet on the ground and head out of the clouds. That is my position. — Yours, etc., B. W. PATTISON, , Hokitika.
