N-attack protection improved

President Carter . has directed his- administration to take new.-steps to assure the protection of , key. Government. and military officials during . a nuclear attack, according ,to Defence Department sources.. .The directives to the Defence .Department and .the Federal Emergency Management Agency were : . issued within the last few months, ’but. were ..part of an over-all re-examination of the united States’ offensive and defensive posture as opposed to the Soviet Union. ■ iThe directives are believed to include re-examination of procedures for the movement of 1 key military and political leaders out of Washington, improvement of s e c u r i t y of telecommunications lines, and the creation of a network of airborne and- underground command posts for military and civilian’leaders.
The Defence Department sources said the renewed evaluation of the Government’s ability to protect its leaders and - command structure was prompted in part by the increased accuracy and numbers of Soviet missiles.
