Naomine Iwaya sends up a great spray of snow as he makes a typically stylish turn through a slalom gate in the Europa F.I.S. series at Mount Hutt. Iwaya, aged 19, is regarded by the Japanese manager (Mr Masa Otsue) as having excellent potential in the specialist slalom event. It may be another two or three years before he reaches his peak. The young Japanese, who also trained and raced at Mount Hutt during the last northern winter, was one of many skiers who faltered in the F.I.S. slalom at Coronet Peak, but he finished a creditable seventh (1.38s behind the winner) in the international slalom at Hutt.
