Teaching jobs

, Sir, —G. C. Bliss (August 9) does not give us qualifications for being able to make so. many comments on teaching. Is the correspondent a teacher, a formerteacher or a parent? The letter could give the impression that our recent “stopwork” weapon had something to do with facing dull, uninterested pupils day after day. This, of course, could not be further from the truth, as one speaker so rightly pointed out that it was with great reluctance that many teachers left their classrooms and their pupils. The meeting voted overwhelmingly in favour of the issue under discussion and I would venture to say that if the argument in G. C. Bliss’s letter had been framed into a motion it would have been defeated by a similar margin. On what ’’ grounds can the correspondent say that “there are no other rewards” in teaching apart from a “good salary”? The rewards and the challenges are still there, -r- Yours, etc., SEAN REGAN.
