Letter for sale — $4600

A letter written by a member of Captain Scott’s expedition to the South Pole is offered for sale 'for. $4600. Robson Lowe, Ltd, of London will display the letter at Zeapex, the New Zealand international phi-" latelic exhibition to be held at Auckland on August 23 to 31.

The letter contained eight stamps which had been overprinted specially for the expedition. It was

sent by Lieutenant E. R. G. R. Evans,second-in-command to Captain Scott, to Misses Vera and Kitty Radcliffe, in February, 1913. A total of 100 sheets of 1909 one penny carmine stamps were overprinted with “Victoria Land” for use on the expedition. Towards the end of the expedition 10 sheets of New Zealand 1909 id green were overprinted but only some of the letters in the last dispatch of mail from

Victoria Land Post Office* on Ross Island, carried this stamp. Lieutenant Evans’ letter contains four of each type of stamp as well as two one penny stamps on th® envelope. ■ The Victoria Land Post Office was opened on Janu-. ary 3, 1911, when the Terra Nova reached Cape Evans. Captain Scott was appointed postmaster. The office closed on January 19, 1913.
