Works projects in Chathams

The Ministry of Works and Development has a substantial development programme in the Chati ham Islands.

The two main projects are the construction of an aircraft runway at a new landing site and the rebuilding of the T-head at the Waitangi wharf. The airport runway, at Karewa Point, 30km closer to Waitangi than the present Hapupu strip, would be completed next year, said the Ministry’s district materials and investigative engineer, Mr D. A. Tucker. The runway project, estimated to cost $3 million, was progressing well, he said. It would be able

to accommodate aircraft such as Friendships. Reconstruction of the wharf in concrete will be finished by Christmas. Piles dating from the 1930 s are being discarded. The wharf is being widened and lengthened simultaneously, a tatotal cost of about 8900,000.

A playing field for the Te One School is under construction, although work has been delayed by the recent bad weather. The need for extensive drainage has contributed to the estimated $50,000 cost of the work. A sewerage system being installed at the radio transmitter station is expected to cost $40,000.
