New aluminium smelter

Sir, — Professor Moeseke has warned the New Zealand public iof the : flaws, in the proposed Fletcher-C.S.R.-Alusuisse scheme. It seems certain that when all factors are considered the proposed smelter will result in higher electricity prices and taxes to provide cheap power for the consortium. More overseas loans will further increase our interest load. Interest and other invisibles already require all the earnings from our meat exports. As Professor Moeseke points out, a reduction in the price of electricity to the present New Zealand consumers would lower costs of production and allow the economy to expand. Many more jobs would become available. This would benefit all New -Zealanders. Instead our Government seems to be committing us to • a scheme which will only be of benefit to the overseas multinational companies. — Yours, etc., ROSEMARY BARNES, Cheviot. August 8, 1980.
