Smoking in hospital
Sir, — One wou)di expect medical institutions to lead the way in preventive medicine. Why then, does Princess Margaret Hospital not have the courage of its convictions and forbid smoking on its premises? By allowing this in any any area of the hospital, it is making a mockery of the medical profession’s condemnation of smoking as a health hazard. Smoke-free wards are a token gesture only. — Yours, etc., J. S. MOOR. July 28, 1980. [Dr H. T. Thompson, Medical Superintendent, The Princess Margaret Hospital, replies: "Apart from in. a small staff lounge, the only places where smoking occurs in the hospital are in the vestibules on each floor. Here there are . notices requesting visitors not to smoke but this is not easy to police and this is the area where patients go to smoke. I would agree with your correspondent that our attitude to this problem has been rather weak and we hope to do better in future.”]
