One-day suspension for rider

C. A. Brough was suspended from race-riding up till and including August 18 and Jonboy Hunt, his mount which finished second in the Redcliffs Handicap, was relegated to sixth by the Canterbury Jockey Club’s judicial committee at Riccarton on Saturday. Brough was found guilty of careless riding in that he allowed his mount to shift ground inwards and cause interference to . Cop This, which f eventually finished

sixth, about 150 metres.from the 1 finish and continued to allow Jonboy Hunt to shift ground • inwards until he made contact with. Evening Rose, which finished third, forcing her to shift ground inwards gradually to the winning post. ■ After hearing evidence from the stipendiary . stewards, the riders concerned, viewing video tapes of the race and hearing a statement from Brough, the committee found that both the chances

of Cop This and, ; Evening Rose were affected and consequently relegated Jonboy Hunt to sixth and promoted Evening Rose to second and Cop This to fifth. Mr Hickey, which finished fifth in the Grand National Hurdles, was disqualified from that placing when his rider, R. L. Rokela, weighed in I.skg under his weigh Out' weight. On examination of Rokela’s gear, it was found that the stitching round the pocket of the lead bag he had. used had tom and he had lost some lead at sonie stage during the running of the race. As the lead bag was found to be in reasonable order the committee took no action against Rokela.

In the same , race N, J. Harnett,, the rider of the Winner Bymai, was fined $2O for weighing in Ikg in excess of his weigh out weight. M. J. Gillies, the rider of Rabalam which fell at the first flight in the Grand National Hurdles, was sent to hospital with a fractured left leg. G. A. Clutterbuck, the rider of London Trader in the Amalgamated Packaging Handicap, was fined $5O for allowing his mount to shift S round outwards into the ne of running Of Diamond Pal when not sufficiently clear and causing that runner ; to be checked about 400 metres from the finish. In determining the penalty, the committee took into account Clutterbuck's straight forward evidence and the fact that the horses were racing so far out from the running rail. Other hordes, beside Diamond Pal, which received resultant checks because of the incident were Good Way, Lady Creosote and Firpo. P. B. Smith, the nder of Good Way, was fined $6O for weighing in 1.25 kg in excess of his weigh out weight.
