Swear in Maori: judge

PA Wellington A Maori who appeared in the District Court at Lower Hutt on an obscene language charge, was told by Judge J. K. Patterson to swear in his native tongue. Teata Ata, aged 33, a labourer, had pleaded guilty to using obscene language in a public place, the foyer of the Stokes Valley Motor Inn, on July 31. Ata said he had been provoked by the police

into using the language complained of. When asked by the Judge what race he was, Ata said he was a Maori and proud of it. “Then swear in Maori, and no-one will, know the lifference,”- the Judge said. The Judge then asked the man what tlie Maori equivalent of the words complained of was. When told, he replied: “In those circumstances use that.” He convicted Ata and fined him $lOO.
