F.O.L. wary on Buller coal

The Federation of Labour is not being drawn to take sides on the controversial Buller coal sales to Japan. The Canterbury Trades Council had written asking for F.O.L. support in opposition to the depletion of New Zealand’s resources. But the. F.O.L. executive, mindful of the Miners’ Union support for sales of West Coast coal to keep the mines open and miners in employment, has replied to the Trades Council that it wants to examine the wider implications. with concepts of the wider economic and social strategy based on the manpower requirements of the labour force of New Zealand and the use of natural resources in the true national interest.” Opposition to shipments of Buller coal to Japan have come from . some unions, such as the Seamen’s Union, because New Zealand seamen are not manning the ships, and from the CampaignNew Zealand, on the ground that the Government is selling assets that should be used in New Zealand.
