Envoys charged

NZPA-Reuter West’ Berlin Two members of the staff of the Iraqi Embassy in East Berlin have been charged with attempted murder, preparing an attempted bomb attack and illegal possession of firearms, according to the police.

The first secretary (Mr Khalid Jaber) and a technician employed by the.embassy (Mr Hay-Ali Mahmoud) were arrested in West Berlin on Saturday. They were alleged to have handed a suitcase full of explosives to accomplices planning to blow up a youth centre in West Berlin.

The police said they attempted to arrest the diplomats as they handed over the suitcase of explosives but Mr Jaber fled on foot; he was chased and caught soon afterwards. Mr Mahmoud fled in a car bearing diplomatic licence plates. When police vehicles blocked his path the diplomat reversed at high speed and smashed into several cars. The police said both men violently resisted arrest. A Kurdish students’ congress at the centre was to have been the target of the attack, West Berlin security officials said.
