Wellington Forty-four of the 65 entries for-this year’s James Wattie Book of the Year Award directly tap New Zealand liistory for source material, according to the convener of this year’s judging panel, Air Gordon McLauchlan. /> - “I guess its symptomatic of a national self-ab-sorbtion in a time of crisis,” Mr McLauchlan said. "History pervades the- biography and fiction.” Some of the .work, he said, came from sincere and diligent amateur writers trying to get down a family or regional stofy, some were by polished’.prpfessional craftsnten. and a fe.w of the books were by diligent artists. The winner of the s4ooii first prize, double that' of last year; will be announced on October 15.
