Cocaine tycoons ‘financed coup’
NZPA New York Mafia cocaine dealers in Bolivia probably played a significant role in financing last month’s military coup d’etat there, “Newsweek” says in its latest issue. Numerous Bolivians have nicknamed the coup “the Cocaine Putsch,” according to the magazine, It said cocaine business, worth an estimated $5OO million a year, is centred in the central Bolivian city of Santa Cruz. . , Santa Cruz is also the
stronghold of the extreme Right political movements that brought .General Luis Garcia Meza to power, “Newsweek” said. The civilian Government overthrown in the coup had promised to fight the cocaine trade, and early this year a plane carrying 700 kg of pure cocaine was seized by the police. The plane belonged to Norberto Salomon, a former aide to General Hugo Banzer, a former Bolivian President, “Newsweek” said.
