Flats ready at Arts Centre

Two of the five residential units being built at the Arts Centre are nearly finished. The general manager of the centre (Mr Brett Riley) said the first two had been decorated and carpets were about to be laid. However, the flats would not be let until all five were finished in a couple of months because of the noise problems. Mr Riley said he also wanted to see the architect's completed conception of the units. •

. Plans have been made for seven more flats, but' these will depend on the success of the first five and the availability of space in the Arts Centre.

Mr Riley said there would

be no difficulty in filling the one bedroom and two-bed-room units. There was a waiting list of about 50 people. “A lot of people are quite keen on urban living. Being close to the city centre is attractive to some,”, he said. Mr Riley said that rent for the flats, which had views over the Botanic Gardens, would probably be about $5O a week. The idea behind the flats was to prevent the isolation of the arts from the rest’of the community. Although no policy had been set on selecting tenants, preference would probably be given to people associated with the Arts Centre.
