County holds fast on landfill opening
Waimairi County Council could not allow its coastal landfill site to be used before 1986, the scheduled time of opening, its works, reserves and traffic committee recommended last evening. Tire County Chairman (Mr D. B. Rich) moved that the Christchurch City Council and the Metropolitan Refuse Disposal Committee be advised of the decision. He said that a move at a recent refuse disposal committee meeting to bring the opening of the site forward from 1986, to relieve pressure on the Bexley tip, was a political stunt. He was concerned that there had been an attempt to
tamper with the landfill proposal before it was considered; at a town planning hearing. The Metropolitan Refuse Disposal Committee had tried to short-circuit the matter by opening the site early, he said. the chairman of the works committee (Mr I. G. Clark) said it was impossible to bring the opening forward three years, because the environmental impact report and landscaping were based on a 1986 open-! irig date.- 5 ’ " . The meeting decided to I form a sub-committee ■ to meet.’ .a group’ from the refuse- committee to cori-l sider access roads to the Wai-I
main.coastal landfill area. - Mr. Clark said the matter arose. because the council was concerned that it would be "landed” with the task of improving access roads if the proposal went, ahead. It wanted to see if finance was available from other areas, such as the refuse committee or the District Roads Council. Cr Adcock, who agreed to be part of tlie sub-committee, i said he opposed any proposal ithat put heavy traffic I through residential, areas. He i wanted the discussion to in-, .elude alternative routes to the landfill site “in-the,un-likely event' of the proposal going ahead.”
