Boeing wanted

PA Wellington The Air Force will negotiate with Air New Zealand to buy one or more of its Boeing 737 aircraft when they are surplus to airline requirements. The Minister of Defence (Mr Gill) said last evening the R.N.Z.A.F. had a pressing -need to build up its longer range air transport capacity. “ft is particularly important .that the Air Force should be able to carry increased numbers ‘ of pas-

sengers at reasonable speeds within New Zealand’s primary area of strategic interest, 'the South Pacific,” he said. This would allow the defence forces quickly to deploy troops for operations or exercises.

Such a requirement would probably become increasingly important in the next few years as defence co-operation developed with Australia as well as with- the countries of South-East Asia and the Pacific, Mr Gill said.
