Arrests at beauty show
PA Auckland I Eight people were arrested loutside Trillo’s Nightclub, 'Auckland, last evening after demonstrators , brandishing borer bombs and aerosol cans had been removed from the building, according to the police. The demonstrators were protesting at the “Miss Auckland” contest. About 20 of them got through police security and paraded in the cabaret blowing whistles and carrying placards. They also set off borer bombs in the women’s toilets and liberally sprayed cream on mirrors. In the melee, the stage microphone lead was cut.
The six women and two men arrested were charged with offences ranging from disorderly behaviour to assaulting and resisting the police.
A “confused and stunned” Miss Angela Geggus was named “Miss Auckland.” Miss Geggus, aged 22, of St Heliers, is a receptionist for the Youth Hostel Association. The runner up was Miss Debra Anderson, aged 18, of Remuera.
