‘l2 keys in case I got locked out’

A burglar was said in the District Court yesterday to have told police that he had 12 keys on him in case he got locked out “of places.” Damien John Severs, aged 18, convicted on one charge of burglary and another of possessing an instrument capable of. being used to commit burglary, was remanded on bail of $l5OO to August 11 - for a probation report and sentence.

Severs admitted both offences which took, place on July 21. Detective • Sergeant M. Wright said at 3.50 a.m. that day the defendant had driven to the intersection of Wairakei and Normans Roads.

Getting out of his vehicle Severs had forced the side door of a chemist’s shop from where he had removed about .$2OO worth of drugs. Severs when apprehended nearby was found to be in

possession of the drugs, a jemmy bar, and 12 keys. In explanation he had told the police that he needed the keys in. case he got locked out, “of places,” said Sergeant Wright. . . All the property was recovered and compensation of $4O, in respect of the damaged side door, was sought. Judge Paterson set bail at $750 with a surety of the same amount.
