Frigate’s trials
PA Wellington After more than six months tied up at Auckland, _the Navy’s frigate Taranaki put to sea yesterday for trials in. the .Hauraki- Gulf and the Bay of Plenty. The frigate was taken off patrol duty in late January when it was discovered that ; pipes carrying superheated i steam were affected by metal fatigue. i The Navy dockyard at Deivonport was too busy to 1 take on the job, so the Navy called in private enterprise. The Taranaki’s sister ship, the Otago, ’ had developed : similar problems * and been .fixed ..in a., fortnight at Pearl Harbour, but, the Taranaki’s repairs dragged on / for months. - The Taranaki will resume fisheries patrols as soon as the repairs are proved satisfactory.
