Records set at South Island sale

By

W. R. CARTSTON

New records were established all along the line at the 13th annual South Island Bloodstock Sale inChristchurch. yesterday. The aggregate was a record, the average was a record and there were record prices also in the broodmare, two-year-olds and yearling sections of the sale. There were two major factors which contributed to the huge success of the sale. One was that two halfbrothers to the local champion, Little Brown-Jug, were among the offerings and the other was the dispersal of the stock offered by Mr Harold Crawford and Mrs Margaret Wilson, of Dunedin, to dissolve a partnership. The stock offered by the Dunedin partners included several notable' members of the famous Fireside family established by the late Dave Wilson. Those five . lots changed hands for a total of $103,500 and the broodmare Kindle, in foal to Approval, topped the sale by bringing $30,000. She was bought in by Mr Crawford. Flambee D’Or, a daughter of. Lomond and Kindle, changed hands for $26,000. She, also in foal to Approval, was purchased by the Melbourne Bloodstock agent, Mr Jim Shannon. The Marton trainer, Evan Rayner, acting for Strontian ; Farms, Hunterville, went to $21,000 to secure a yearling daughter of Noble Bijou and 1 Flambee D’Or. ] • Fire Gate, a five-year-old daughter ,of Gate Keeper and < Kindle, was bought .by Mr B. Hartland, of Russell, for 1 $lB,OOO and a two-year-old < colt by Noble Bijou out of Kindle was bought in by Mr . Crawford for $5500.

,Dal g e t y Bloodstock, Christchurch, outlaid $40,000 to secure the two half-broth-ers to. Little Brown Jug. They paid $26,000 for the King’s Palace-Pease yearling colt and $12,000 for his two-year-old half-brother by Beaufort Sea.

Probably both of these youngsters will eventually go overseas but meantime they will be quartered at the Kempton Park Stud, Putaruru.

The top-priced two-year-old in yesterday’s sale was a well-grown chestnut colt offered by Mrs J. S. Mclntosh, of Tuatapere. Wrightson NMA, acting for a Sydney buyer, paid $13,000 for this youngster. Although there was the Occasional dead-spot in yesterday’s sale there was -a ■demand. throughout the day for good quality stock and the previous record price was surpassed three times. The' previous best was $21,000 paid four years ago for the broodmare, Bonny Alouise, which was bought in by' her Invercargill' breeder, Mr A. J. Crooks.. Altogether yesterday, 103 lots changed hands for an aggregate of $399,100, and average of almost $3875.

The' aggregate and average for 77 lots sold 12 months ago was $151,650 and $1970. Sales of $lOOO or more, were:—
