Airlines locked in fare duel
NZPA-Reuter London Two big airlines began a fight for Atlantic passengers yesterday in a duel which sent fares on the lucrative London-New York route plummeting. Tit-for-tat cuts and undercuts were made within minutes of each other in the biggest battle of the air fares war since Sir Freddie Laker introduced his Skytrain three years ago.
British Airways had started the ball rolling on Sunday by announcing a new off-season stand-by fare of $2Ol on the route. At noon yesterday, America’s Trans World Airlines hit back with a flight S 3 cheaper. Within minutes, B.A. knocked 84 more off its price, making it $1 cheaper, and said it was “determined to stay in front” of its rival. Thirty minutes later T.W.A., just as determined not to be beaten, said: “We will equal that,” leaving both companies’ fares at $lB6. , ■ T.W.A. also announced other big cuts for flights during October-to-April to Boston, Philadelphia, Chi(cago and Los Angeles. A spokesman for PanAmerican Airlines said, “we are monitoring the situation hourlv, and considering the advisability of various options.”
