Mr Gill applauded

PA Wellington The Minister of Defence (Mr Gill) in his Parliamentary swan-song last evening, attacked the calibre of the Opposition. But at the end of his address in the Budget debate, his last before taking up his position as Ambassador to the United States, he received applause from both sides of the House.

“It has been interesting to have goads from the Opposition: pity it is so blunt,” he said. “There is really nothing I can do about that. "Perhaps when I come back in 1984 I will offer some coaching opportunities for those who want to wreak havoc with the Government. What the Government really needs and would like to have is an effective Opposition.”
