Borstal for credit spree
PA Auckland What was described as a self-indulgent spree with a bank credit card led to a sentence of Borstal training being imposed on a Christchurch woman when she appeared in the District Court at Auckland yesterday. Wendy Alena O’Neill, aged 18, an unemployed saleswoman, of Halswell, had previously pleaded guilty to 33 charges of intent to defraud involving more than $l7OO. For O’Neill. Mr R. S. Chambers said it appeared that her grandfather was willing to pay restitution although he had no evidence to prove this. O'Neill was three months pregnant and “simply wants to -come home to roost” with her friends and family. Judge Aubin said that while the Court desired to be merciful he also had to consider the need to make it clear to other people who went “berserk with a bank card” that the offence would be treated seriously. Borstal staff were used to dealing with pregnancies and were well able to do so.
Judge Aubin made no order for restitution.
