Secret trial ends

PA Wellington The third secret trial in as many months concluded in the High Court, Wellington, on Monday evening. The first trial began on May 19 and the second in June. The third trial began two weeks ago. Two men faced a joint criminal charge in the latest trial. In each of the trials, Mr Jusice Quilliam made identical orders prohibiting publication of the names of the ; accused, any particulars ’ likely to lead to their identification, and any report or account of the whole of the evidence, the contents of the indictment, and any part of the trial, including the verdict.

His Honour said on each occasion that it was not his intention that the suppression orders remain in force indefinitely, and that a time would be reached when details could be published. But the orders had to remain in force for a number of weeks “in the interests of fairness and justice.”
