Colour catches the eye
Urban Views — an exhibition of paintings by John Coley at the C.S.A. Gallery until August 8. Reviewed by David Brokenshire.
This is a very large solo exhibition of 34 paintings with prices from $2OO - $650. John Coley has developed an individual method of painting .using simplified shapes all carefully outlined in black. Each area has its own colour and perspective is indicated by oblique planes. Flat paint without gradation of colour is used. There are no shadows. no brush strokes, no people and almost no suggestion of movement. The total effect is achieved by a careful, balancing of space, colour and tone. This is a very cerebral type of painting, very colourful and certainly they would provide excellent colour accents in the foyers of large city buildings.
The whole exhibition is splendidly mounted and hung, yet over-all. in my view, somewhat lacking in “heart,” — in the com munication of hums warmth and involvement
