‘Package Deal’ well wrapped

“Package Deal,” an exhibition by invited artists at the C.S.A. Gallery until August 10. Reviewed by David Brokenshire.

What an intriguing idea to send a group of artists a package containing canvas, timber, custom wood, paper, string, ant' cardboard and what a widely’ varying show has resulted.

Just a few of the painters have not been deflected from their own personal explorations and they have presented their own instantly recognisable paintings. The remaining artists have accepted the challenge and presented floor pieces, wall pieces, Assemblages, and sculpture. Pat Hanly' has made a caped figure without any additions to his package. Rosemary Johnson has constructed a very large floor piece with light seeming to radiate out from the centre. Evan

Webb has presented a superbly crafted kinetic piece protruding out of its zippered canvas bag. The movement of this delicious piece really must be experienced. Morgan Jones has continued with his “boxed” theme but this time wryly called “There is nothing in this.” One of the most interesting is a beautifully con-

structed and balanced “tower” called “Mail order minus 20 per cent." Each part of this construction has been finely shaped and worked and you feel that you must tip-toe. past it in case it comes crash•ng down. By its very nature this is a somewhat disjointed exhibition but by starting out with the same materials the interest lies in the many different ways these have been used.
