Hygiene with food

Sir, — In view of the publicity we have regularly on hygiene, why do so many ignore it. People in tearooms are provided with tongs, yet insist on handling sandwiches and cakes while selecting. Their excuse; they find the tongs awkward to use. I hate my food handled by someone else’s dirty fingers. I do not care how welldressed or well-bred they think they are. They have still got diseases to spread. I also dislike those who allow their children to run their fingers over the; clean plates set out for food. I now look for the few tea-rooms which wrap sandwiches, but it is not really the answer. How can these dirty people be made to leave other people’s food alone. One of these days I will get so wild at habit handlers, I think I Will deliberately touch their selected food and see what they do. — Yours, etc., N. HERBERT. July 24, 1980.
