Aranui to be laid up?
PA Wellington The Railways Department has told maritime unions that it will lay up the Cook Stait ferry Aranui and pay off the crew if a rescheduling of ferry services is not accepted. ; . 11 A change to the present schedule will mean cuts of one-thihf ’in wages and or time off for crew members.
The decision is the result of a drop in freight tonnage and follows negotiations between the department and the four unions on ways to reduce the number of sailings without increasing total wage and associated costs. The smaller Aranui and Aramoana .will. be affected, but not the Aratika or the Arahanga.
