The old public library
Sir, — With the threatened destruction of the old city library the powers that be should be reminded of the following facts. In' the first place this fine old Edwardian building, like many of its predecessors long since destroyed, was erected at a time when architecture and building construction was at its peak, and by highly skilled craftsmen the like of which we may never see again. The cost of destroying this local landmark would outweigh the benefits gained and the speculators should leave well alone in order to preserve the New Zealand heritage. As we are continuously reminded of the earthquake risk, all redundant buildings of architectural value, should be reserved for future emergencies for the purpose of accommodating the homeless. — Yours, etc., L. WESTNEY. July 23, 1980.’
