Dr Stewart will wait
Until such time as Eric Watson decides on his availability, the former Canterbury coach, Jim Stewart, will not accept nomination for the position of All Black coach for the Welsh tour in October. Dr Stewart’s position was outlined to a meeting last evening of the Canterbury union by its chairman, Mr B. J. Drake. Mr Drake said he had spoken to Dr Stewart three times in the last week and while Dr Stewart was keenly interested in the Welsh appointment he did not want to be nominated
: until Mr Watson’s situation > had been clarified. Mr L. J. Russell believed ■ that the union should be ■ consistent and nominate Dr I Stewart as it has in the past i because it believed him to be the best man for the job. ; However, it was the view : of the majority that Dr Stewart’s wishes should be respected and in any event I Canterbury has a man on : the national council (Mr R. W. Thomas), who could, if ’ he saw fit, nominate Dr [ Stewart when the vote is 1 taken next month.
