Chch B in chess final
A fine team effort by the Christchurch -Boys’ High School B team • has enabled it to make the A grade - final of “The Press” schools’ chess competition at the expense of Christ’s College. After losing its first two matches, the Christchurch B team won its next three, and will join St Andrew’s A, Christchurch A and Shirley A in the round-robin final. An experienced Christ’s College team was beaten, 5-1, by Christchurch, only its top board player, Steve Withington, gaining a success. Christchurch A, with
three top players victims of influenza and unable to play, was beaten by St Andrew’s A. This allowed St Andrew’s A, which won the B grade! last year, to top the preliminary round. Its top three members, Michael Turner, David Burridge and Tim Langrish, were unbeaten. Fifth round results were:— A grade.—Christchurch B 5, Christi’s College A 1; St Andrew’s A 4), Christchurch A 1J; Shirley A v. Burnside A (no result). B grade.—Papanui A 5. Cashmere A 1; St Andrew’s B 41, Burnside B 11; Shirley 8.. 4, Christ’s College B 2; Rangiora 31, Mairehau 11 (one to be adjudicated): Linwood A v. Ashburton, no result.. ■ .
C grade.—Cobham 31, Heaton 2j;Avonside G.H.S. 5. Rang! Ruru 1; Xavier v. St Margaret’s, no result: Christchurch G.H.S. v.
