Marshall, Croft hit by illness
NZPA-Reuter Leeds Two of the West Indian fast bowlers were hit by illness on the second day of the three-day cricket match against Yorkshire at Leeds yesterday. Colin Croft was out of action with a headache, while Malcolm Marshall could not bowl because of a sore throat.
Against the depleted attack, Yorkshire reached 141 for four at the close, in reply to the West Indians’ first innings score of 342 for three declared.
Rain and bad light reduced play to just under three hours, and it was after a stoppage for bad light that Croft withdrew. He had bowled three balls of an over before the interruption and did not reappear afterwards. With the fourth test against England starting at The Oval, London, on Thursday, the tourists cannot afford to suffer any casualties to such a key aspect of their team. •
Before his withdrawal, Croft dismissed the opener, Richard Lumb, for 10, while Michael. Holding sent- back Bill Athey for 19 to make Yorkshire 66 for two.
The. off-spinner, Derek Parry, had the Yorkshire captain, John Hampshire, caught at the wicket for eight, and then claimed the important wicket of Geoff Boycott by bowling the county’s England opener for 53.
