Waikato horses for Sydney

Special correspondent Auckland

Bayshore and El Dufus, two of the better Waikato gallopers, will be flown from Auckland today to new owners in Sydney. Both are to be trained by V. P. (Paul) Sutherland who has made a great name for himself lately through his success . with former New Zealand horses.

Sutherland spent several days' in Auckland and the Waikato last week. Accompanied by a Te Rapa trainer, G. A.. Rogerson, with whom he has a close association, he inspected a big number of tried gallopers with the

idea of purchasing on behalf of clients.

A 36-year-old former jockey, Sutherland turned to training in the New South Wales country district of Nowra when increased weight forced him to give up riding. After enjoying very fair success at country meetings, he shifted to Sydniy and some three years ago established himself at Rosehill.

Although a great admirer of New Zealand bloodstock, Sutherland has so far held off buying yearlings, preferring to pick out tried horses. He has done this with marked success, including Calpurnicus, Windvale Beau and Big. Bickies in

the many he has bought during the last two or three years. Sutherland has turned to New Zealand as well for staff: both his stable foreman and head lad are New Zealanders. A present star of his team is Saintette, a rising three-year-old St Puckle filly, with whojn he has won three races.

In Bayshore Sutherland has secured a thoroughly consistent performer and equally capable over sprints and middle-distances. El Dufus showed any amount of promise last spring and has looked lately as though he could at last come back into good form.
