Horne’s good week-end

By

RAY CAIRNS

While Robert Forrest was preventing Roger Fowler from completing a notable double, Toni Horne was enjoying easily ills best week-end since rbturning from Europe in the busy little group of amateur cycling events yesteeday and on Saturday. Forrest, with his .strong frontman’s sprint, comfortably outfinished Fowler in the Amanda Wilks B3km classic.at Prebbleton, and thus prevented the winner of the Penny Farthing Classic from making it two in a row. Both were a healthy margin clear of the other six sUMvofs of their 16min buneh. Horne.did not win fastest time —that was won in a .gallop byMurray Steele from Russell Nant —but he more-'l-than made iftftends yesterday In the , contrasting pair of races, the mountain time trial and tile criteriums at Woolston. Horne won tlie time trial, abbreviated to finish at the junction of Mount Pleasant Road and the Summit Road because of ice further up, by 22sec from Peter McEwen, and the criteriums by six points from Steele, - Obviously-, he brooked no challenge In the contest for the b6st set of performances over the two events on the same day, David Fenton. McEwen and Dave Freeman having their own little contest for runner-up. Peter' Nichols could be well satisfied with his handicapping

for the Amanda Wilks, shield race: a mere 70soc separated the eight who contested : line honours and the 26 from scratch and the middle and break’mark who galloped in tofietherF,.JUßt a breeze of wind would- nave made that much difference and a judge's nightmare. T \ The race itself-was relatively Uneventful, the 17km block containing no hills, and nor Was there atty -wind to split the field) It became more a matter of bunches steadily losing occasional members, and the field closing up. scratch catching the 7min group in the final lap. ’> Abbreviations used in the. results ’ are: Papanul (P-), Woolston W.M.C.
