Railways advertising
Sir, — It seems incongruous to me that the New Zealand Railways should see fit to advertise on television. If my memory serves me correctly this Government-run . enterprise lost in- the vicinity of S7OM last year and here it is wasting yet more of the taxpayers’ money to advertise a service which has no opposition, is allowed no opposfa tion, and is a service which the taxpayer has to use whether he likes it or not. Any transport operator in the private sector will move goods quicker and more efficiently than the Railways. As far as being “No. 1” in freight, this is certainly not because the user by choice utilises the services but because in most instances the user has no option. It would be interesting to know how much the taxpayer is shelling opt for the current run of TV advertising. — Yours, etc., PETER YOCK, July 15, 1980. ■
