Road tax ‘a minor cost’
Parliamentary report Road-user taxation of vehicles is a relatively minor component of total running costs. The National Roads Board has been shown figures rebutting complaints that the road-user taxation adds to transport costs significantly. A 1000 to 1300 cu cm car warrants road-user tax of 0.51 c a kilometre, which is 1.9 to 2.7 per cent of total running costs; a 1600 to 2000 cu cm car 0.62 c a km, 1.8 to 2.7 per cent; a van of less than two tonnes 0.87 c a km, 0.7 to 1.4 per cent; 2 to 3.2 tonne van, I.oBc km, 0.8 to 1.6 per cent; 24 tonne truck 8.75 c a km, 2.7 to 5.9 per cent; 33 tonne truck 11.98 c a km, 3.4 to 7.3 per cent. In the. case of trucks, road-user . charges were comparable with the cost of tyres and represented less than 10 per cent of standing costs, said the Director of Reading (Mr F. A. Langbein). They were much less than drivers’ wages and considerably less than the cost of vehicle repairs;
