Early Christchurch
Sir, — I am writing an. . M.A. thesis on the northern fringe of Christchurch between 1850 and 1884; the specific area of study being that area to the immediate north of Bealey * Avenue, extending to Winters. Road and lying between Papanui and Hills Roads. I am particularly concerned to find any features within this area which may remain in the landscape today. Such features would include old houses and other buildings or any land-uses of similar type to those carried out , in this earlier period (e.g._ a nursery now. on a site which was between 1850 and 1884 a market garden site, or any business carried on at the same address as that in which it was carried on at that earlier period). Are any of your readers able to provide such information? ’ — Yours, etc., . • ANN BANKS, . Geography masters room, University of Canterbury. July 14, 1980.
