Britain to develop new tank

NZPA London The British Government has announced that it will spend $3lOO million on new tanks and armoured personnel carriers to strengthen its forces in Europe against what it said was a strong Warsaw Pact challenge. A $720 million order for 240 Challenger tanks to replace aging Chieftains will be placed immediately and a $2400 million replacement programme for 1900 armoured combat vehicles will be announced soon, the Defence Minister (Mr Francis Pym) told Parliament. The - announcement sigalled the way for possible future collaboration on tankbuilding programmes for the end of the century with Britain’s North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies. Hitherto Britain had planned to build its own allnew main battle tank — a programme called MBT-80 — to replace approximately’ 900 Chieftains. Mr Pym said MBT-80 had now been scrapped, and defence sources said Britain would be examining the possibilities of collaborating on an. entirely new family of tanks with - its principal N.A.T.O. allies. .-
