Disease hits S.A.

Legionnaires’ ■ disease, a pneumonia-like illness which killed 29 people who attended an American Legion conference at a Philadelphia hotel ’in 1976, has spread to South Africa, according to the “South African Medical Journal.” Sixteen cases of the mysterious disease, two of them fatal, had been reported in Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth over the last 18 months. The exact cause of the illness, which takes the form of a severe influenza and extremely high temperatures, is not known but doctors believe it may be due to an organism which thrives in building ventilation systems. —Cape Town.
