Unemployment
Sir, — If, as Mr Chapman alleges (“The Press,” Tuiy 14) Labour has taken a marked swing to the left then the Muldoon -Government is responsible. If one takes account of all the. subsidies plus other preferential treatment tp farming, the 66 million sheep of this country receive far better consideration than ; the unemployed. Because’ a sheep produces wool then a lamb to end up on the dining tables of Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, or Britain, ■ ’t is given V.I.P. treatment par excellence whereas an unemployed person is subjected to the condemnation and taunts of the untouchable, forever secu-re, professional and farming communities. If the Muldoon Government cannot, or will riot, make full employment its top priority goal, it should acknowledge Its own failure by resigning, making way for another form of Government, be it socialist, or better still, coalition, that would put people - oefore sheep. Bearing in mind the forecast of a possible 300,000 unemployed by 1984, some drastic changes of administration are obviousiy needed/ — Yours, etc., < ARTHUR MAY.' July 14, 1980.
