Prices for prime stock mostly steady

Prime stock price?, which generally improved last week, were steady at Addington market yesterday. Only the best of the prime Jambs offered improved by 50c; the rest sold at par. Prime sheep values were unchanged. Store cattle sold particularly well, considering the time of year. For the first time this winter reasonable quality in-lamb ewes were varded; these received plenty of attention, selling about S 3 ahead of expectations. Prime lambs Prime lamb prices did not change much from last week although the best of the entry of 1376 (1406 last week) were 50c deare:. Quality was generally better than in previous weeks and, for once; only a few overfat lambs were offered. Values were:— Large lambs: $19.70 to $21.10 with odd sales to $23. Medium lambs: $18.30 to $19.60. Light lambs: down to $16.70. Shorn lambs: $18.40 to $19.80 with odd sales to $21.40. Sales of prime lambs included. — D. W. Prime sheep Last week’s top price of $l7 for old ewes in . the prime sheep section was not reached but generally this type sold well. The yarding increased from 581 last week to 707 but very few young wethers and ewes were offered and consequently these sold readily. Values were:— Best two-tooth wethers: $18.20 to $21.60. Medium two-tooth wethers: $16.90 to $lB.lO. Two-tooth ewes: $16.60 to $lB.BO. Best old ewes: $14.50 to $16.30. Medium old ewes: $11.20 to $14.20. Light old ewes: down to $lO.lO.

Wethers (two-tooth unless otherwise stated); F. A. Bull jun. (Sheffield), 12 at $lB.BO to 521.60; Stone Jug Farm (Inland Road), 33 at $17.10 to $18.60, 44 four-tooth at $15.90 to $17.50, 29 six-tooth at $14.50 to $16.60. Old ewes: P. J. and P. Tully (Rakaia), 36 at- $l4 to $16.30; A. T. Metherall (Ladbrooks), 71 at $14.10 to $16.20. Prime cattle A small yarding of prime i cattle sold consistently. Only--1339 were offered (509) and this was slightly below trade requirements. Quality was generally better than last week and prices increased accordingly. Over all the improvement would be about $5. The medium-weight heifers and steers were the best sellers and competition for these was strong. The few cows offered were easy to sell. An g u s-Hereford cross steers again topped the market. The bst of 12 from G. Steele (Port Levy), who is a Addington “regular,” made to $446. The tops of the heifers went to $362 and cows $314. Heifers and steers to 220 kg sold between 119 c and 123 c a kilogram; between 220 kg and 270 kg, from 118 c to 121 c; and over 270 kg, to 117 c. The best of the ewes made to $2B but a great number sold between $23 and $25. Lamb tallies were down but interest was restricted to better-grown lines. Wether lambs sold to $16.60 (this for Romneys) and ewe lambs between $14.10 and $17.10. The total offering was 600 lambs (1056 last week) and 881 ewes (650). Sales of store sheep included.—S. F. The consistency of the demand for the adult steers and heifers in the yarding of 181 (472 last week) surprised some observers. The best quality types offered had an excellent sale but the bulk of the market was of low quality and sold accordingly. The small yarding of choppers sold at similar rates to last ■ week. Good quality choppers often made over $llO. Values were.— Light pork: $63 to $73. Medium and heavy pork: $74 to $BO. Light and medium baconers: $B2 to $95. Heavy bacon: $95 to $lO5 with odd sales to $llO. Light choppers: $4O to $6O. Heavy choppers: $llO to $l3O.

Store pigs The store pig market started off where it finished last week. Although the market was much smaller, and few large stores were included, quality and prices were again very good. Competition was solely local and the market support was maintained until the end of the sale.. Breeding stock also sold well, fn-pig gilts made to $lBO and in-pig sows to $255. Values were.— Small weane'rs; $2B to $36. Good weaners: $3B io $45. Slips and small stores: 546 o $55. Large stores: $55 to $6O.
