Shipping News Converting to coal poses problems
Many countries, including Australia,’have examined the feasibility of a return to coal-fired ships in the face of the present Oil crisis, but a prominent shipping engineer has said that several problems have to be considered. . . Mr G. Pentimonti, engineering vice-president of American President Lines, believes that coalfired propulsion should be limited to drv bulk carriers with low speed requirements. Ship designers will have to find space to install coal burners while preserving as J nuc ,| cargo space as possible, and will also have to allow for an increase of about 20 per cent in vessel deadweight to meet the requirements for coal bunkering. Mr Pentimonti also said that ports would have to be adapted to handle coal-burning ships. Coal storage facilities would be required, as well as new machinery to handle coal on board the "vessels. He said that lines could expect higher capital costs, initially, upon conversion to coal. arrivals _ Coastal Trader (12.1 a p.m.’, 2500. Auckland (S.C.N.Z.I.
