The Australian racing driver, Alan Jones, leads Nelson Piquet, of Brazil, during the British Grand Prix at Brand Hatch yesterday.

Jones went on to win the race and take, another firm step towards the 1980 world drivers’ championship.

Jones, by far the most consistent driver on the Formula One circuit, profited from the tyre trouble which hit the Ligiers of the early leaders, Didier Pironi and Jacques Laffite, of France, and posted his third successive grand prix triumph of the season.

Jones had to overcome tyre problems himself over the closing laps but still finished a comfortable 11 seconds ahead of the Brabham of the second-placed Piquet. Jones’s Argentinian teammate, Carlos Reutemann, winner of the British classic when it was last held

at Brands Hatch two years ago, came third, just two seconds behind Piquet. Derek Daly, of Ireland, Jean-Pierre Jarier, of France, gave the Tyrrell team a rare taste of success by finishing fourth and fifth respectively while, the french prospect, Alain

Prost was sixth in a McLaren.

Jones, a winner this season in Argentina. Spain — which was later declared void after the drivers’ suspension controversy — and France two weeks ago, now heads the title chase by a six point margin from Piquet.
