Restaurant blitz?

The Health Department in Christchurch is considering a blitz on restaurants to check food handling after a marked increase in food poisoning cases in the last six months.

To the end of last week 172 cases of food poisoning had been reported to the department for this year. This is as many as for the whole of last year.

The Deputy Medical Officer of Health (Dr M. A. Briesemann) said yesterday that food handling in some restaurants appeared to have become “rather lax”. Householders were not blameless however, he said. “Most of the increase is from private homes, but there is sufficient increase from restaurants to warrant some sort of investigation.”
