Railway I keeps grip on A-grade title lead

Although its lead was slightly Whittled back. Railway I still holds a commandbig grip on the A grade badminton competition after the tenth round of play at the Skellerup Hall on Saturday- , , . The powerful Railway side beat South Brighton I, 6-2, but its two closest rivals Hagley I and 11, had bigger winning margins. Railway now leads Hagley II by 12 points, Hagley 1 by a point more. Geoff Miller was taken to three games by Brent Wilson, and Alby Duckmanton and Pat Marshall needed setting to win their singles matches in straight games. Easy victories in the men s and women’s doubles game gave Railway a good win over a determined South Brighton si.de. Hagley H had an 8-0 win over the Combined side, while Hagley I was too strong for Christchurch. Charles Wasley dropped the first game to Peter Terrace, as did Jenny Hood against Noeline Sintes. However, both recovered to win.

Christchurch’s sole success came from Joanne Tucker, in her first A grade match this.season, who beat Colleen Austin. Knox had its second consecutive big win when it hammered Railway 11. 8-0. Last week it beat University. 7-1. However, Railway put up some stiff resistance. Mike Nolan raced to a big early lead against Warren Edgecombe In the No. 1 . men’s singles, won the first game, but ended up losing the third in setting to the tireless Edgecumbe. Craig Crossweller and Ellen Croxon took games off Elon Kirkland and Lynda Kitchingham before losing, and Nui Jacobs and Miss Croxon had their chances against Janet Miles and Miss Kitchingham in the women’s doubles. Hagley 111 pulled itself above Bryndwr-Kaiapoi in the points table by beating that team, 6-2. It was an unusual contest in that none of the matches went bevond two games. In the other match. South Brighton II beat University, which has struggled in recent weeks after an excellent start In the competition, 5-3.
