Big tourist campaign

PA Wellington A big campaign to attract more tourists to New Zealand will be launched in North America in September this year. The Minister of Tourism (Mr Cooper) says that the Tourist and Publicity Department is co-ordinating a “Come on to New Zealand” promotion to be presented to travel agents and potential tourists in 15 cities across the United States and Canada. “ ‘Come on to New Zealand’ will feature a special travel film and entertainment by a 10-member Maori cultural group from Rototua,” said Mr Cooper. “The campaign will be sponsored by the Tourist and Publicity Department, Air New Zealand, Pan-Am and the Mount Cook Line.”

Mr Cooper said that North America was now New Zealand’s second-big-gest market for tourism. During the year ended March, 1980, 70,168 Americans and 16,988 Canadians visited New Zealand, an increase of 20 per cent over the previous year. Travel receipts from the two countries over the same period amounted to $50.3 million, compared with $36.5 million in 1979.
